Pat Griggs (2011)

A confidante of Charles Darwin, Joseph Hooker first travelled to the Antarctic from 1837-1843 and wrote a publication of his Himalayan Journals. His reputation was assured. He was appointed assistant director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1855, and followed in his father's footsteps to become director in 1865. Recognized as a founding father of modern botany, he died in 1911, having identified more than 12,000 new plant species. This book is extensively and beautifully illustrated from the archives of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Joseph Hooker Trailblazer takes the reader on an extraordinary voyage with one of the world's greatest botanists, highlighting his relationships with family, travelling companions, friends and colleagues who influenced life and scientific ideas.
